In the summer, many people in Milwaukee opt for getting exercise outside. One of the easiest ways to get an outdoor workout in is to go for a run. It seems easy enough: lace up your shoes and head out the door. But runners of color have an additional checklist to go through to make sure they’ll be safe. Ahmaud Arbery was killed in 2020 by white vigilantes, while running in a neighborhood near his home. The news of Arbery’s death elevated conversations in the running community about safety, especially for runners of color. Read more

'FEAR' Gives Safe Space for Milwaukee Runners of Color

Empowered, safe, seen: these three words are not typically used to describe a weekly, two-mile run. However, this is how organizers from the Milwaukee-based group, “Forget Everything and Run,” or F.E.A.R., wants those who join in for a run to feel. FEAR’s goal is to provide a safe space for runners of color. The group is modeled after a national initiative and was formed six years ago in the city.
Even through the COVID-19 pandemic, groups have reduced in size with virtual warm ups, FEAR organizers say the group is being embraced by runners around Wisconsin, at now 40 runners strong. Read Full Article
